Gayle and Brian are getting married next month in Florida, so they asked me to take their engagement pictures. We started in the North End and ended up downtown, and they brought their adorable dog Reese with us. Gayle and Brian were super fun during this shoot and so great to work with.

Gayle is wearing the cutest dress and shoes! She told me she looked everywhere to find the perfect shoes to match her dress but they didn’t have her size so she is actually wearing shoes that are a half size too small. And she walked everywhere during the session with them on! Wow! I love it when couples care about the small details like a killer pair of heels!

Reese was extremely well behaved and cooperative. Somehow we managed to get her to sit right in front of Gayle and Brian!

Gayle and Brian like playing bocce ball, even though they are probably the youngest players in the neighborhood by a few decades. They had a quick bocce ball game, and a couple of the regulars came over to watch us play.

couple hanging out in the city

A few weeks ago, I helped out at a very intimate wedding at the Boston Public Garden (please see the official pictures by Shang Chen photography here). Being an assistant is fun because you don’t have to pressure to deliver any images, so it’s a chance to get out of the box. I decided to only shoot with my 70-200 lens, and I had a lot of fun because this is my favorite lens now!

In case you’re planning a wedding at the Boston Public Garden in the winter, FYI – they drain the pond. There were a few puddles of water, and a few ducks were trying to wade in it, desperate for the city to fill the pond again.

A night out in Boston

May 10, 2010

My aunt gave me some Red Sox tickets for the second game of the season. They played the Yankees that night, so it was a full house and a very fun game to attend! Unfortunately Frank was actually out of town that day, so I brought my friend Sandy. Our seats were pretty good, but with her awesome connections, we were able to sit somewhere even better–in the first row of the Green Monster! It’s a great view of the field, and there was no one in front of me, so I could get a clear view from the field (the picture on the top left was taken from my original seat).

I am not one of those die hard Sox fans, so maybe one of my readers can tell me if this guy is the coach. It was a very close game (tied until the 9th inning), so perhaps is he praying for a win.

Okay, I actually took these pictures on a different night, but I wanted to put all my Boston photos together. I went on night photowalk with some friends. It was really fun! I’ve always wanted to take pictures of night, but just never felt comfortable. We had a big group of people, so I wasn’t scared to lug around all my equipment in pitch darkness!

I took this somewhere in Cambridge, near Kendall Square.

The sky was a strange purplish color, and I bumped my ISO pretty high to capture the color. The streak of light on the right side is the subway car.

I really like the Leonard Zakim-Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge. It’s hard to tell in this picture, but there are purple skylights illuminating it at night.

One day I received an email from a guy name Wade saying that he was going to fly out to Boston from Texas and propose to his girlfriend, who was performing in Don Giovanni that weekend. He was going to propose Friday night, and could we take pictures Saturday morning? How exciting! I’ve never done an engagement shoot where it was a surprise to the girl, but I immediately fell in love with the idea. I love the happiness when a couple gets engaged. When a girl puts that shiny sparkly diamond ring on her finger, they have an unmistakable-wow-I’m-going-to-get-married glow about them! When I met them the next morning for the shoot, they were so happy and in love, so it made my job sooo much easier! They are such a sweet and adorable couple, and I’m so honored to photograph such a special time in their life!

I was initially worried about this session because it was raining a lot that weekend and ended up being one of the worse floods in a century. We shot the session very early in the morning to try to avoid the massive downpour that was approaching. Thankfully, when we started, it was only light rain, and then it started raining much harder shortly after the shoot. Kristin and Wade were up for anything, and I’m so happy that we got a few shots outdoors and they didn’t mind getting a bit wet! Thankfully, the session turned out much better than I had imagined, and we found a couple of nice indoor locations in the Theatre District without having to walk more than a few blocks. That’s what I love so much about Boston! I can shoot almost anywhere in the city and I’ll find a nice spot to shoot. I have so many favorites from this session that the hardest part about blogging is choosing which images to show! I’ve narrowed them down here, but you can see more pictures on my Facebook fan page or the entire session on my website.

I have no idea what is going on here but I think it’s really cute.

They are both musically talented, so we took a few photos of Wade playing the piano. This reminds of me Edward playing the piano with Bella in the room, which is my favorite part of the Twilight movie because it’s so calming and melodic.

At one point, they mentioned that they missed their pets, so I had them pull up pictures of their dog and cat on their phones.

While I was taking this picture, a group of five construction workers stopped working on the building next door and approached me. I was a little worried that they would tell me to stop taking pictures because I was in a construction zone. One of the guys asked me what I was doing. I started to get a little scared and told them that we’re taking engagement photos. Then he yelled up to the guy on the scaffolding, “Hey Paul, I was right, that couple’s gittin married!” (insert heavy Boston accent.) Aw, even construction workers can be total softies.

engagement session in Boston

Last Sunday, I teamed up with Karman Lee Photography to take engagement pictures of her brother and future sister-in-law. They live in Connecticut but they drove down to Boston for an engagement shoot. It was pretty cold that day, but Shan Shan and Alex were troopers and even went without their coats for some of the shoot! In contrast, I had on a huge white down coat with an aviator type beanie to cover my head and ears. I look more like an eskimo than a photographer, haha, but love how it keeps me warm so I’m not shivering and making my photos blurry.

I am so excited to show off these photos! Aren’t they a gorgeous couple?! I love the outfit that Shan Shan wore too. The bright cheery colors almost made me forget it was the dead of winter! We started off shooting in the lobby at the Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA) in Boston, which is a really cool building. Then we walked around the waterfront. I’ve never been to that part of Boston before, so I loved this shoot because I got to the chance to explore! Thanks Shan Shan and Alex for braving the the cold with Karman and me!

Sam Adams Brewery

October 8, 2009

My friend Phil was in town this week, so we decided to take a tour of the Sam Adams Brewery. I rarely ever drink (I can’t remember the last time I’ve had beer…years perhaps?), but I love touring factories. I also read that the tour was really interesting and informative, so I was excited to visit.

When we first arrived at the brewery, it was really small. The brewery shares space with other companies and restaurants, so finding the tour building wasn’t that easy. It wasn’t until we took the tour that we found out that most of the beer is bottled in Pennsylvania and Ohio, and the brewery in Boston is mainly for PR.

Here is our tour guide in the first room of the tour, where we got to sample three different kinds of barley and smell hops. The dried green herbs below are hops.

hops

The first barley we sampled tasted like Grape Nuts, the second type tasted like toast, and the third barley tasted like coffee. I think the barley is all the same but they were all roasted differently.

barley

This was the second and last room of the tour (if you don’t count the bar afterwards). This is the entire brewery!! There’s no bottling center here, so the beer they brew here goes into kegs.

Sam Adams brewery tour

When we first entered the bar area, there were pitchers of beer on the counter, so everyone thought it was self-serve. Then the tour guide came in a few minutes later and freaked out because we were supposed to wait for her to pass them out to each table, and by then, most of the beer was gone already. Haha!

pouring beer

We each got a 7 oz. souvenir glass that was filled up 3 times with (from left to right) Boston Lager, Octoberfest, and 6 AM pale ale. The 6 AM pale ale is a beer that was brewed by one of their employees, so it’s not for sale. It’s called 6 AM because it was brewed with coffee, and you can really taste the coffee!

There was also a lesson on beer tasting at the end. This is when we all held up our glasses and looked at the clarity of the beer. Cheers!

Sandy

October 1, 2009

I’ve been good friends with Sandy since my freshman year of college.  We both moved to the East Coast after college, and now we’re in the same city!  (Friends who attended my wedding may also know her as my Maid of Honor.)  She’s an awesome teacher, and needed some pics for the teacher bulletin board, so we went to Muddy River Riverway Park (known to locals as “The Riverway”) in Boston for pictures.  I had such a blast with Sandy, and I’m excited to shoot more if anyone wants awesome pictures! =) To see more, click here.

Fall is coming and the leaves are so pretty! But the yellow leaves reflect so much light, so I plan on using a polarizer filter for next time.

This is Sandy trying to be serious.

She can only be serious for so long before she starts bursting into laughter!  I love it!  Sandy has such a nice smile!

I asked Sandy to run towards me and got this shot. This is probably my favorite photo.
