Our first Christmas

December 24, 2009

Merry Christmas!! This year we will be celebrating Christmas for the first time as a married couple! After years of intense traveling during the holidays, we decided to stay in town this year and have a relaxing Christmas vacation. I am so glad didn’t fly this year because air travel this year was terrible and a lot of my friends were stranded at the airport for days! Also, since we were going to be in town this years, I didn’t feel guilty buying a Christmas tree. One day I was checking out all the street vendors to find which local farm had the best prices. I was going to wait until Frank got home, but instead I found the perfect tree, so I bought it and hauled it home myself! It was surprisingly much cheaper than buying a pre-lit fake tree at Home Depot, and plus, it benefited the YMCA youth programs (my old workplace, yah!) instead of um, China. Also, I read that a fake tree actually leaves a bigger carbon footprint, so I decided that a real tree wasn’t that wasteful after all. Plus, we’ll recycle it and turn it into mulch later.

My mom was really sweet and sent us our first ornament. I finally found a use for my adorable wedding cake toppers from @feltmeupdesigns by repurposing them as ornaments and hanging them on the tree!

These Christmas lights are twenty years old and they still work!  They were slow to blink at first, but then they worked just fine.  Christmas lights are so fun and pretty to photograph, and watching them blink is so mesmerizing!  For the other images, I changed the focus on my lens to get nice bokeh (blurry background) shots.  Thanks for reading and have a happy and safe holiday season!

Shang and Andrew

December 22, 2009

Last weekend, I had an opportunity to photograph Shang and Andrew. They are such a cute couple, and I’m so excited to share their photos with you! Shang (of Shang Chen Photography) was so nice to set up a workshop for a group of assistant photographers, and they were the subjects! We shot outside at a nearby park, and they were good sports to brave the freezing cold. On the bright side, it was so cold that there were no kids playing in the playground, so we were able to shoot in the park all to ourselves with no distractions!

I am so pleased about how these pictures turned out, and now I am no longer a weenie about shooting in the cold (I bought fingerless gloves which really helps!). Anyone else up for a winter shoot? :)

I am usually assisting Shang on photoshoots, so I don’t really see her interacting with her boyfriend Andrew. I saw a different side of her during the shoot, and I was almost in joyful tears seeing how tender and caring they are with each other. I caught myself several times saying “awww!”

I was recently introduced to Animoto and was totally floored! Their slideshows are so cool and easy to make. I just tried out the free 30 second slideshow and made a slideshow of Shang and Andrew! Leave a comment and let me know if you prefer the Animoto slideshow or traditional slideshows instead.

Winter is here!

December 21, 2009

Today is the first official day of winter and the shortest day of the year! On the bright side, I can now look forward to longer days when the sun sets after 4:30 PM. However, on the down side, it’s already snowed four times before winter started, and I have a feeling I’m going to be shoveling a lot more snow before the season is over. I took most of these pictures during the last snowfall and not during last weekend’s snowstorm (which I later found that the correct term is called a nor’easter or northeaster, one level below blizzard status).

I had to pick Frank up from the airport during the last snowfall, so I was outside close to midnight shoveling snow because his flight was delayed! I was really excited to see how bright it was outside, so I ran back into the house to grab my camera to get this night shot.

Here’s my street the next morning.

The backyard. So pretty to see all the trees draped in snow!

My yard is completely white with snow except for this one leaf!

I love it when the snow starts to melt and you can see the plant below poking through.

A Halloween themed wedding

December 8, 2009

A few weeks ago, I assisted Boston wedding photographer Shang Chen at a wedding she was shooting.  The couple had a Halloween theme which was really fitting because the reception was in Salem, Massachusetts, where they once held the famous witch trials. I had sooo much fun at this wedding because it including a pumpkin-carving contest, a costume contest, a magician, and a talent show! I’m only putting up a few photos, but Shang has a lot more incredible wedding photos posted on her blog! Go visit!

Here is Shang in action!

While Shang is taking a picture of the beautiful bride, here is my view. :)

The wedding procession was really unique and cute!  Since there were two aisles at the church, they walked down together!

Right after their first dance, he lifted her way up! I love it!!

This table came prepared by bringing Mr. Potato Head accessories instead! Cheers!

The magician went to every table and did some really neat card tricks!

The bride and groom had lots of guests who participated in the talent show, and the sword fighting was just the first act of many!

If you’ve ever seen the Rocky Horror Picture Show, then perhaps you know the Time Warp dance. That song brought back so many fond memories and was stuck in my head for hours after the wedding! Thanks for bringing me along Shang!

Full Moon Photography

December 3, 2009

Ever since I saw my friend’s photos of the moon, I knew I wanted to try taking photos of the moon too.  I’ve heard of photographers shooting the moon, but I didn’t really understand the excitement until I tried it myself.  Yesterday was a full moon, but it was too cloudy, but tonight was a great night for experimenting because it was a clear sky.

I used a Nikon telephoto 70-300mm lens to take these pictures. It’s an older lens that doesn’t have vibration reduction (image stabilization in Canon speak), so if you don’t have the newer lens, don’t sweat it. I didn’t even use a tripod for this (confession: I don’t own one yet!), so you don’t have one either, it’s okay too! Just switch your DSLR to manual mode, stabilize the camera, and start shooting away.

I never knew I would be able to see so much detail of the moon with my camera!  Not bad for trying to shoot something out of this world!  I really like the crater detail near the edges of the moon.  Now I am really curious to know what I will see if I shoot the other phases of the moon!

This image is straight of the camera so you can compare how much I cropped the image above.  I shot the moon in the dead center to get the sharpest image possible.
